Aeneid Work: 21 September 2018
-Gods and Goddesses Work, Book I
---Objective: As this work opens, the gods and goddesses are already taking sides and meddling in the affairs of mortals. For various reasons, some gods and goddesses support the Trojans and want to help them settle down and found a city, while others obstruct this goal. The objective of this lesson is to help students clarify the positions of the gods and goddesses at the beginning of the poem.
---Ongoing Project: Have students work together as a class to start a character journal that lists the major and minor gods and goddesses that appear in Book I. Ask them to identify any special powers or responsibilities each god or goddess has, how the deity feels about the Trojans (and why), and what interactions the deity has with the Trojans. Encourage students to continue to make entries in this journal as they proceed to read the rest of the poem.
---Class Discussion Preparation: Are the gods and goddesses presented as better, or more moral, than the humans? What sorts of flaws or bad character traits might they possess? Do they possess any admirable character traits? What are the main distinctions between the deities and the human characters so far?
