| Dear Piedmont Classical, Having completed the first week of distance learning for Piedmont Classical High School during the 2020 COVID-19 shutdown, I have a lot for which I’m grateful. I am thankful for supportive guardians, diligent students, and educational technology like Remind, Weebly, and Google Classroom. Above all in this time of turmoil and uncertainty, I am thankful for a wonderful family who don’t mind that I respond to inquiries at all hours of the day. I hope that you are taking time to spend with your loved ones, and are being cautious as you do so. As you’ve been told, the State have extended our shutdown through, at least, May 15. With this having been said, we must be prepared to move forward with digital education. Google Classroom provides so many resources: -fora for discussions, -unit notes and videos, -exercises from the textbook (and the answers to the practice), -formative assessments (Knowledge Checks), -summative assessments (quizzes and tests), and -cultural readings (and the tests that come with them). In other words, only the teaching has changed, but the evaluation has not. Because of the miracles of Remind and email, your students’ questions are answered by me when they come in. Beginning very shortly, I will begin offering Tutoring Sessions via Zoom (look into the app). This is a program where your students can join a video chat, and can ask any questions about the material! Next week, I will provide more insight about when we will arrange these digital meetings. Outside of traditional class time, I suggest that your students begin doing what I am: engaging with the beautiful world! This lock-in is a wonderful opportunity to engage with masters and the classics that they have given us. I, for one, am reading Roald Dahl, AA Milne, CS Lewis, and Oscar Wilde this week. With whom are you and your students enriching your lives? Reading isn’t cancelled. Go on walks, and convene with nature. While most paths are closing, nature isn’t cancelled. Pick up a hobby! My family and I are working on our garden in this time! In times of darkness, it is most imperative to keep your light shining. Look for the beauty in the world, in literature, in your families. This virus and time apart can help us grow in unimaginable ways if we allow them. Kindest Regards, Jarrid K. Looney, Ph.D. Classical Education Director Latin Teacher Piedmont Classical High School |
